Comparison of Urinary Tract Infection in Meatal Care Methods for Patients with Indwelling Catheter

Abstract
Purpose:This study was performed to evaluate the effects of meatal care in the reduction of catheter-associated urinary tract infection.

Method:The subjects of the study were 52 patients with foley catheters in an intensive care unit of a general hospital from Mar. 1 thru Oct. 31, 2004. 26 patients consist the experimental group which took daily meatal care with skin cleanser, and the other 26 patients consist control group which took daily meatal care with 1:1000 Benzalkonium chloride solution.

Result:The urinary tract infection rate of the experimental group was 23.1%, and that of the control group was 34.6%, and there was no significant difference between the groups.

Conclusion:Accounting from the research, it was proved that meatal care using skin cleanser is to be very effective to prevent urinary tract infection for patients with indwelling urethral catheter during a short term, within 14days.
